Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has urged headteachers of primary and secondary schools to ensure that teaching takes place exclusively for six hours, from 8 am to 3.45 pm, on weekdays. The Ministry, Machogu stated, allows for a maximum of 6 hours of teaching, emphasizing that learners’ education should be natural and not coerced.
Highlighting Finland’s exemplary education system, Machogu pointed out that the country operates on a 3-hour teaching regime. He emphasized the importance of schools adhering to designated school hours, as this allows learners to take charge of their own learning and participate in physical education activities.
During a meeting with officials of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) at his Office in Jogoo House on Thursday, Machogu expressed his gratitude to the association for their support in managing education and the ongoing government education reform.
The meeting, attended by Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Basic Education, witnessed Dr. Kipsang urging the leadership of KESSHA to regulate the cost of school uniforms among its members.
In turn, Mr. Indimuli raised several issues that he wants the Ministry to address to facilitate easier management of secondary schools by principals. These issues include capitation funds for the free day secondary education program, school uniforms, disbursement of curriculum materials, management of co-curricular activities, and auditing of school finances, among others, as requested by the association.
